It’s a parent’s worst nightmare when their child becomes the victim of a horrific sexual crime. It’s even worse when a city practically allows it to happen.
For the parents of the victim of Juan Ramon-Vasquez, it’s a nightmare they’ll have to live with for the rest of their lives.
Ramon-Vasquez, a Honduran national, was previously deported from the United States in 2009, only to return years later. After being captured and held by the Philadelphia Department of Prisons, ICE put out a detainer on him.
The city of Philadelphia chose not to respect it thanks to their sanctuary city policies, releasing Vasquez into an unaware public.
After being given his freedom, the illegal repeatedly raped a young child.
Philadelphia’s sanctuary policies don’t appear to be a somber measure taken to respect the dignity of illegal aliens. In fact, the city’s leadership appears to be overjoyed with policies that allow criminals to walk among their citizens.
The city’s mayor, after winning a court case against the administration of President Donald Trump, was filmed dancing and shouting “a sanctuary city!”
United States Attorney William M. McSwain does not share the mayor’s enthusiasm.
“The facts of this case illustrate all too well the direct threat to public safety caused by the City of Philadelphia’s sanctuary city policies,” McSwain said in a DOJ press release.
“After the City let this criminal loose on the streets of Philadelphia,” he continued, “Ramon-Vasquez repeatedly raped an innocent child. If the ICE detainer had been honored by local law enforcement, this crime never would have happened, and the victim would have been spared horrendous physical and mental trauma.”
McSwain is absolutely right, make no mistake.
Philadelphia’s ultra-liberal policies actively hindered ICE and their law enforcement activities. Without the city’s interference, Vasquez would be in a faraway country — and would have found it difficult to commit any crime in the United States.
The virtue signaling that goes into constructing a framework for sanctuary city protections may score leadership points in liberal circles, but there’s no question that it endangers everyday citizens of all ages and backgrounds.
Unless somebody is held accountable for this gross government negligence, crimes will continue to happen.
McSwain seemed to agree completely, and thankfully men and women like him are fighting to protect Americans.
“Criminals like Ramon-Vasquez take note: my Office will do everything in its power to find you, to protect our community, and to seek justice for your victims,” McSwain warned.
“Unlike the Philadelphia government, we are not on your side.”
Ramon-Vasquez is now serving a sentence of up to 20 years for his gut-wrenching crimes.
