A concealed-carrying clerk shot an armed man who tried to rob a convenience store in El Paso, Texas, on Monday, police told KFOX-TV.

What are the details?

A 32-year-old Hispanic man entered the DK convenience store in the 5200 block of Fairbanks Drive around 12:30 p.m. and demanded money, El Paso police Sergeant Robert Gomez told KFOX.

In addition, the suspect showed a weapon in his waistband, Gomez added to the station.

But the store clerk — a 28-year-old man licensed to carry a concealed handgun — shot the suspect, the El Paso Times reported, adding that there were two other customers inside the store at the time.

Gomez told KFOX the clerk fired at least once and "is of course cooperating and talking to investigators."

Police said they found the suspect bleeding from a gunshot wound and took him in stable condition to University Medical Center of El Paso, the paper said.

Gomez added to the station that no charges are pending at the moment, and the only individual in custody is the suspect.

“We're going to investigate it. Depending on what occurs, more than likely, it’ll just be presented to the [district attorney's] office, but it's too early to make determinations right now," Gomez added to KFOX.

People who work in nearby businesses told the station they were shaken up after learning about the attempted robbery and the shooting.

"It was very hectic earlier," Brianna Junker recalled to KFOX, also noting "a lot of cars and commotion."

Maria Estela Ordaz told the station she was “scared because we are nearby."

They added to KFOX that the clerk was defending himself.

“It would have been his life or the life of the other guy who was going to steal," Ordaz noted to the station.

Junker agreed, telling KFOX, “I’m going to protect myself, too, if I was in that situation. You know, it’s your life or his."

KTSM-TV added it was an isolated incident, and there was no threat to the public.
