D’Oh! “The Simpsons” producers announced Friday that the comedy series would not no longer use white actors to voice nonwhite character, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The change came following Hank Azaria saying he would no longer voice Apu Nahasapeemapetilon in January of this year. Apu, an Indian character in “The Simpsons” who operates a convenience store, has been at the center of debate for years as viewers have argued his depiction is racist.

Azaria also said he does not want to voice other black characters such as Lou and Carl and Hispanic characters Julio and “Bumblebee Man.”

“The Simpsons,” a household favorite, has run on Fox for over 30 years, but has been hesitant to change when issued were raised in the past. Its decision to no longer use white actors to voice nonwhite characters comes after nationwide riots and protests against racism.
Following in the footsteps of other animated shows including Netflix’s “Big Mouth,” Apple’s “Central Park,”  and “Family Guy,” the change attempts to better reflect the race of their characters.
