All of the Democrat-run cities that essentially pulled back their police forces in the face of violence and destruction over the summer — caused by what the liberal media labeled as “mostly peaceful” protesters — may soon heavily regret their refusal to stop the lawlessness, as they now face a potential drastic loss in federal funding.
As The Hill reported, President Donald Trump’s administration is currently kicking around an idea that would yank massive amounts of federal dollars from a handful of cities that were designated by the U.S. Department of Justice as cities that, during the riots, “permit anarchy.”
The cities currently on the list will make sense to most, as leaders in the listed cities allowed violent protests, looting and destruction of small businesses to fester essentially for months on end, not to mention the number of innocent lives lost on both sides of the debate.
New York City, Seattle, Portland and Washington D.C. are the first four cities on the federal funding chopping block and no matter how woke the mayors of those cities believe they are, at the end of the day, they need federal dollars more than any other cities in the nation, given their high populations.
Sadly, the list of program cuts in these cities center around health and welfare of children, the elderly and adults in vulnerable communities like those inflicted by HIV.
And while Democrats at all levels are quick to demonize Trump and his administration for even suggesting that these important programs be cut, at the end of the day, the blame absolutely falls on Democratic city leadership.
End of story.
The move to federally defund these cities didn’t come out of left field, either.
It was only last month that Trump promised to move on the issue, tweeting a threat that apparently the mayors of those cities didn’t feel like taking seriously.
“My Administration will do everything in its power to prevent weak mayors and lawless cities from taking Federal dollars while they let anarchists harm people, burn buildings, and ruin lives and businesses. We’re putting them on notice today,” Trump tweeted in September.
Recently, the DOJ indicated that additional U.S. cities who permitted “violence and destruction of property” could be added to the list of cities that could see crucial federal funds stripped away.
However, knowing that President Trump is a master at the art of the deal, I suspect that it’s only a matter of time before many of these cities see the light and, with any luck, pledge to change their ways the next time social justice riots break out.
That might be wishful thinking, but believe me, at the end of the day these cities cannot continue operations as normal without help from the federal government.
