‘You had one job!’: Gaffe-prone LA city councilman Kevin de Leon apologizes after bungling the Pledge of Allegiance during a council meeting

A Los Angeles council member was left red-faced after being asked to lead the Pledge of Allegiance, only to stumble on some of the wording.

Long-time California lawmaker Kevin de Leon had been asked by Los Angeles Council President Nury Martinez to lead the chamber in the Pledge of Allegiance during a virtual meeting yesterday morning.

After saying that 'it would be an honor', de Leon began to recite the words.

However, the former Democratic majority leader in the state Senate and state Assembly, seemed to muddle the words up in his head.

Instead of correctly reciting the Pledge of Allegiance words, de Leon said: 'I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…undervisible, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…for which it stands. One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'

After the fumbled attempt to lead the Pledge, somebody in the chamber is heard saying 'oof'.

People watching the councillor's attempt at the Pledge of Allegiance weren't too impressed and took to social media to express their disappointment.

One person Tweeted: 'I've got a kindergartener going 4 half-days a week who knows the pledge, likes saying the pledge, and knows how to work Zoom.

'If the LA folks need someone to lead them in saying it, they can give us a yell.'

People took to social media to aim jokes towards Kevin de Leon for his attempt at the Pledge, with some suggesting their kindergarteners could have done a better job, while others suggested he had come 'so close' to getting it right

Another said that their five-year-old kindergartener could have done a better job.

Others joked that de Leon had come 'so close' with his attempt and that he had only 'had ONE job.'

Leaning into his mistake, de Leon took to Twitter to acknowledge his faux pas and uploaded an image of Bart Simpson writing the correct words onto a blackboard.

In his tweet, the councillor said: 'Embarrassing, am I right?'

He also used the opportunity to encourage people to donate 'a few $$' to a non-profit organisation.
