Police in Connecticut have determined that a mother intentionally drove her SUV into a local river last July, killing both the woman and her special-needs adult son.
Connie Crowell, 54, and her son, 22-year-old Jack, both drowned when the vehicle submerged into the Housatonic River in Seymour on July 31, 2020.
Seymour Deputy Police Chief Roberto N. Rinaldi said in a press release that investigators determined that the incident was a 'homicide/suicide,' the Monroe Sun reports.

'On the day of the incident, a boater who was in the area, observed the vehicle go into the water and went to assist and provide rescue efforts,' Rinaldi said.
'However, Connie Crowell refused to acknowledge or accept the boater's assistance and rescue efforts.'
Rinaldi said that the car went into the river at 175 Roosevelt Drive, which is near a long driveway leading to the river bank, The Valley Indy reports. He added that police spoke with two witnesses on the boat.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at around 3.43pm, leading to a massive rescue effort in the area.

Crowell was known in the community for her work with Alcohol and Drug Awareness of Monroe (ADAM), working with children in educating them on sobriety.
The mother ran in the Fairfield Sunset 5K with Jack, who had special needs. Jack graduated from Masuk High School in 2007 and was known for being an active participant in community events.
'Everybody loved Jack, I'm sure at all the schools, but especially at Masuk,' said Superintendent of Schools Joseph Kobza, who was formally principal of the high school. 'He was always happy, always smiling. He just brightened up everyone's days.'
