Foreign Affairs Chairman McCaul: Republicans Playing Games With Speaker Race ‘Embolden’ Our Enemies

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) said during an interview over the weekend that the group of House Republicans that voted to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Speaker of the House have emboldened foreign adversaries since Congress is paralyzed without a speaker.

McCaul made the remarks during a Sunday interview with ABC News’s Jonathan Karl on “This Week” after eight Republicans voted with the entire Democratic Caucus to remove McCarthy as speaker.

McCaul was in the middle of discussing the need for the U.S. to step up and support its allies as enemies abroad have become increasingly aggressive under President Joe Biden with multiple wars breaking out.

“I have to say, it’s my tenth term in Congress,” he said. “This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen because if we don’t have a speaker of the House, we can’t govern. And every day that goes by, we’re essentially shut down as a government.”

“We have very important issues right now, war and peace, and we cannot deal with an aid package, or my resolution condemning Hamas and supporting Israel,” he continued. “We can’t do that.”

“The world’s on fire. This is so dangerous what we’re doing,” McCaul added. “And most importantly, it’s embarrassing because it empowers and emboldens our adversaries like Chairman Xi who says, you know, democracy doesn’t work.”

The Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy included Reps. Matt Gaetz (FL), Andy Biggs (AZ), Ken Buck (CO), Eli Crane (AZ), Bob Good (VA), Matt Rosendale (MT), Tim Burchett (TN), and Nancy Mace (SC).
